Dane DeHaan leaves Young Americans; George MacKay is to replace him

George MacKay to Replace Dane DeHaan in ‘Young Americans’

Upsetting news for all of Dane fans. I can’t bring myself to comment on this, so I’m just posting the news.

The title of the film is also changing to “College Republicans”

British actor George MacKay is set to replace Dane DeHaan in “Young Americans,” which has now been retitled “College Republicans,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Dane DeHaan was attached to star as Karl Rove in John Krokidas’ sophomore feature, before the casting change. The film also stars Daniel Radcliffe and Amanda Seyfried.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think that movie is really going to work out, at least for me,” DeHaan said in a previous interview with TheWrap. “It’s a movie I’ve been really passionate about for a long time, and it looked like it was coming together so many times, but it’s a really difficult movie to find financing for, I think because of the subject matter.”

DeHaan will star in the upcoming sci-fi movie, “Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” alongside Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Rihanna.

“College Republicans” is being produced by Bruce Cohen, Elizabeth Destro, Frank Frattaroli and Kim Leadford. There is no set start date for the movie’s production as of yet.

MacKay is repped by UTA and Premier PR.

Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe with director John Krokidas. PLEASE sign the petition to make the reunion happen

“Young Americans” with Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe (dir. John Krokidas) has been greenlit!

Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan will be reteaming with their Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas for another real-life inspired film, trading in their roles as Beat Generation writers for ambitious, would-be politicians.

StarStream Media announced that the company will finance and produce Krokidas’ Young Americans, based on the Black List script by Wes Jones. The film is inspired by the real lives of Karl Rove, played by DeHaan, and Lee Atwater, played by Radcliffe, on a cross-country road trip as ambitious college students.

The film will portray Rove as more of a straight-laced student who is running to be the head of the College Republicans at his university with the help of Atwater. Atwater decides to take his friend on a trip through the American South, during which they run into Katie King, played by Amanda Seyfried, who may pose a threat to the two boys’ ambitions. In real life, Rove would famously become “The Architect” for President George W. Bush’s two presidential campaigns, while Atwater became advisor to both Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, as well as chairman of the Republic National Committee.

Young Americans is set to go into production this fall, produced by StarStream’s Kim Leadford, as well as Liz Destro of Destro Films and Frank Frattaroli from circle of Confusion. XYZ FIlms is coordinating international sales rights at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth Joining Gore Verbinski's 'A Cure for Wellness'

Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth Joining Gore Verbinski’s ‘A Cure for Wellness’

Director Gore Verbinski has found the leads for his supernatural horror project A Cure for Wellness: Dane DeHaan and Mia Goth.

Revolutionary Road scribe Justin Haythe is writing the script for the New Regency project.

Wellness tells the story of an employee (DeHaan) who is sent to rescue his boss from a European “wellness spa” but soon realizes he’s trapped, and discovers that the facility has a more sinister purpose than just serving the health needs of its patients. Goth, who is in negotiations for the role, will play a longtime patient who is oblivious to the spa director’s dark designs for her.

Verbinski, who is also producing through his Blind Wink Productions, last made a horror film (The Ring) in 2002. Since then, he’s focused on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Rango and The Lone Ranger. He’s repped by CAA.

Production is slated to start in Europe in June, and the film will be distributed worldwide through New Regency’s deal with 20th Century Fox.

DeHaan, who broke out with his role in 2012’s Chronicle, was most recently seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2and Life After Beth. He’s got quite a few projects in the can, including James Dean pic Life, Tulip Fever and Two Lovers and a Bear. He’s repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment.

Goth is more of a newcomer. She appeared in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Vol. II, and will next be seen in the upcoming all-star adventure movie Everest with Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley. The British actress is repped by WME, The Curtis Brown Group in the U.K., Storm Artists and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Young Americans [originally titled ‘College Republicans‘] is a film that will reunite actors Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe and Kill Your Darlingsdirector John Krokidas.

The screenplay, by Wes Jones, topped the 2010 Black List [a list featuring the best un-produced screenplays].

The script is based on a true story from 1973 centred around Karl Rove. Rove, claimed to be played by DeHaan, runs a campaign for national College Republican Chairman. Under the guidance of his campaign manager Lee Atwater, supposedly Radcliffe, Rove’s campaign is far from clean.Their campaign includes a wild road trip intended to drum up support. Despite all the political machinations, however, the focus is really on the friendship between the two, and that’s something that Radcliffe and DeHaan could do a lot with.” [from entertainmentwise.com]

From an interview with Daniel Radcliffe:
“If you had a dream project – if there was a movie of any size or scale – whatever – that you could do, what would it be?”

Radcliffe: “Well at the moment the project that I really want to do is called College Republicans. Hopefully, it would be with myself and Dane DeHaan and John Krokidas who directed Kill Your Darlings. And we’d all sort of get to work together again. So hopefully – at the moment, like that’s my dream project. ‘Cause it’s been up and down for a few years now in terms of if we’re gonna get it done. So, at the moment, that’s my dream” [http://youtu.be/MrI5iBh-3dM?t=7m12s]

Encouraged by John Krokidas via twitter (@krokasaurusrex), we are making this petition to say we would love for this film to get made. We adored Dan, Dane & John’s work in Kill Your Darlings and we very much want to see more from them.

Krokidas made his feature directorial debut with 2013’s Kill Your Darlings, which stars Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan as Beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Lucien Carr, respectively. Krokidas is re-teaming with Radcliffe and DeHaan on Young Americans.

“College Republicans” news from Daniel Radcliffe

College Republicans news starring Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe by John Krokidas

Today is Daniel Radcliffe‘s birthday (Happy 25th, Dan!). Dan was recently interviewed by The Daily Beast.
Among other interesting topics, he also talked about College Republicans, and said that it’s looking like it will happen, once he, Dane DeHaan and John Krokidas can get their schedules to line up.
You can read more details from Dan below:

You’re attached to reunite with your Kill Your Darlings director Jon Krokidas and co-star Dane DeHaan in College Republicans, with you playing a young Lee Atwater and DeHaan playing a young Karl Rove. Is that happening?
DAN:I don’t know at the moment! It’s looking really good, and it’s a fantastic script. That’s the plan—Dane as Karl and me as Lee—but trying to get the three of us in the same place at one time is tricky. It would make a really good movie because I don’t think people know that story at all. Like Kill Your Darlings, it’s a story about the genesis of a very important American cultural phenomenon that nobody really knows about. It’s fascinating how much of the neo-conservative ideal was born in a Ford Pinto driving around the South between Lee and Karl. It’s a serious true story, but it’s witty.
